On Wednesday evening, the rainfall got intense in the city and caused disruption across the city and soon the city streets were waterlogged. The traffic stood still for hours as the rain water flooded low-lying regions. The city’s infrastructure, already under strain due to ongoing metro construction, once again was seen trying to cope with the heavy downpour.
A number of videos under the hashtag #BengaluruRains went viral on social media. Some with updates sharing visuals and some with complaints to get the attention to civic issues exacerbated by the heavy showers.
As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the current weather with heavy rainfall will continue until April 19. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has also issued predictions of widespread rainfall during evenings and late nights over the next few days, providing some respite from the previously dry and hot weather.
As per a report issued by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), 163 wards were affected by moderate to heavy rainfall by 6:15 PM on Wednesday. Areas including Doddanekundi and Hagdoor recorded rainfall levels of 28 mm and 25 mm respectively. Other regions such as K.R. Puram, Basavanapura, Gurdachapalya, and Ramamurthy Nagar also experienced significant precipitation.
Residents across the city reported flooded roads and overflowing drains, particularly in areas like Jakkur, Devasandra, and Yelahanka New Town. The combination of rainwater and sewage overflow worsened conditions in these localities, while water-filled potholes created hazards for both motorists and pedestrians. Falling tree branches were also reported in several areas, raising safety concerns, especially for those commuting after dark.
Despite the challenges, the rains brought a degree of relief to citizens who had been dealing with relentless heat over the past few weeks. The drop in temperature was welcomed, though it came at the cost of mobility and inconvenience for many, including daily wage workers and street vendors caught in the deluge.
As the rains continue to lash the city, authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, especially during nighttime travel.
