Mumbai techie offers to live in your empty flat for free. What does he propose to do in return?

In a bustling metropolis where space comes at a premium and home prices skyrocket beyond the reach of many, a Navi Mumbai software professional has devised an offbeat solution to dodge soaring rental costs. Rather than shelling out a small fortune on rent, the tech worker posted an unusual request online — to live rent-free in unoccupied luxury apartments whose wealthy owners rarely visit.

In a cheeky message posted on Reddit, he addressed absent property owners directly:
“Dear Wealthy Stranger, did you splurge on a fancy Navi Mumbai apartment only to leave it lifeless and collecting cobwebs? Do you swing by once a year to say hello to the dust, then vanish? Why not give your flat a heartbeat (me)—for free, of course?”

This tongue-in-cheek proposal, posted as a digital poster, quickly caught attention online and went viral. While many Reddit users praised his creativity and sense of humor, others were skeptical that any homeowner would take up the offer.

In his post, the developer laid out clear terms: he would live like a quiet presence—"a ghost", in his words — promising no parties, no smoking, and no alcohol. He would pay his own water and electricity bills and emphasized his clean, calm lifestyle. Describing himself as a “tidy, hardworking coder,” he vowed to be the opposite of a problematic tenant.
“Imagine me as a digital monk who comes with his own cleaning supplies,” he wrote.

But what’s in it for the homeowner? The techie pitched himself as a low-maintenance caretaker — someone who would clean regularly, air out the flat, and ensure it wasn’t left stagnant or musty. He argued that his presence would bring peace of mind, especially since there’d be no lease to worry about, avoiding the risk of rental disputes. And if nosy neighbors ask questions? Just say he’s a visiting cousin, he joked.

He even threw in a free “Vastu Reboot Service.” If a property had a bad reputation — say, one marred by a mysterious tragedy — he offered to move in first so future occupants could be reassured: “Got a spooky flat? I’ll be the first brave soul, so you can say, ‘Look, someone’s already lived there!’”

Despite the laughs and nearly 2,000 upvotes, skepticism remained. “Rich folks don’t get rich by handing out freebies,” one user commented. “Why can’t a developer afford rent?” another asked, adding that house-sitting is more common abroad.

Still, another bluntly stated, “No one’s letting you in without paperwork. Squatting is a real problem.”

Even if no one takes him up on it, this techie’s idea sparked a lively conversation — and maybe, just maybe, someone with a dusty apartment and a good sense of humor might say yes.
