India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor or IMEC could expand to include Egypt and Oman – two of India’s key and traditional partners in the Arab World besides Slovenia in Balkans – to advance both strategic interests and regional economic integration.
This suggestion was presented at a high-powered conclave on IMEC organised by leading think-tank of India RIS in collaboration with Council for International Economic Understanding in New Delhi on Wednesday.
In his remarks at the Conclave Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to PMO said IMEC represents sustainability and shared opportunity and the corridor will reduce logistics cost once operational. GATI SHAKTI is well operational in India which can be leveraged for IMEC, he suggested.
Dr. Ashwini Mahajan, Board Member, CIEU noted that IMEC will cut shipping time from 17.5 to 10 days, driven mainly by digitalisation.
Antonio Bartoli (Ambassador of Italy to India) in his remarks said that IMEC is a project for security, culture, tourism, and regional integration. He referred to Italy’s Triste Port as entry point for IMEC. Italy has appointed a special envoy for IMEC.
Ambassador Sanjay Kumar Verma (Chairman, RIS) noted that infrastructure creates opportunities in energy, science and technology, culture, business, societal economics and manufacturing and suggested a soft secretariat for IMEC in all the associated countries.
M Jagdesh Kumar, Former Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) referred to collaborative platform for skilling programs to ensure shared growth and knowledge exchange among IMEC countries.
Ajai Chowdhry, Co-Founder, HCL and Chairman, Mission Governing Board, National Quantum Mission of India noted that India’s capability in Space Tech and space startups could thrive through IMEC, contributing to India’s growing innovation ecosystem.
Linking Indian ports like Mundra, Kandla, and Jawaharlal Nehru with UAE ports (Fujairah, Khalifa) and Saudi ports (Dammam, Ras Al Khair)—IMEC offers a resilient and complementary trade route to the Suez Canal and Red Sea, adding robustness to regional and global supply chains.
