Bringing a revolutionary change in the world of artificial intelligence, OpenAI has officially launched two open-source language models, GPT-OSS-120B and GPT-OSS-20B, on August 6. The company says that both these models are capable of advanced reasoning and can be used locally, even on normal devices like laptops; that is, there will be no need for internet or cloud.
Open-weight model released for the first time after GPT-2
This is the first time that OpenAI has made an open-weight model public after GPT-2. The parameters of these models, i.e., weights, are completely open, so that developers can customize them according to their needs.
The company claims that these models are lighter than larger models like GPT-4o, but no less powerful than any in terms of performance.
Work will run from the local device to the GPU.
GPT-OSS-120B is designed for GPU-based setups, while GPT-OSS-20B is so lightweight that it can be run on a personal computer or laptop.
Both models are trained on text-only datasets, which include science, mathematics, technical knowledge, and coding. These models give excellent results in competitive exams, the health sector, and technical questions.
Access will also be available on AWS.
OpenAI said that both these models are now also available on the AWS Bedrock platform. However, not much information has been made public about the partnership deal between AWS and OpenAI.
Also, the company is setting up its first European data center in Norway. The current value of OpenAI is believed to be around $ 300 billion (about Rs 26,000 billion).
Not compared with competitors like DeepSeek
It is worth noting that OpenAI has not yet compared these models with other open-source AI models like DeepSeek-R1. However, in terms of performance, the company claims that these models are proving to be excellent on many fronts.
