Steven Gerrard set for Saudi crisis talks - but sack could lead to huge payday

Steven Gerrard will have crisis talks over his Saudi Pro League future during the international break.

His £15million a year assignment is hanging by a thread after Friday’s latest defeat left Al-Ettifaq 17 points behind leaders Al-Hilal and just four points off the relegation zone.

The legend’s side have taken just one point from their past seven league matches, and fans are furious. Tensions reached boiling point last week when they were beaten 2-0 in the derby with Al-Qadsiah at home.

A number barracked him following the final whistle shouting to him “to get out of our club.” has not won in the league since September 14. And attendances are also declining.

His deal in the Middle East was extended in January until 2027, so he would be entitled to a sizeable pay-off if he was relieved of his duties.

However, Gerrard remains confident of turning it around: “We must bear responsibility, and continue to correct mistakes. I am aware of the team’s poor past results, and I do not think I have reached the stage of dismissal from team management.”

It’s a far cry from when bookies had virtually shut the book on him following in ’s shoes whenever his reign came to an end.

While Gerrard struggles on without his much-lauded coaching guru Michael Beale, a six-episode documentary which rolls out later this month could be his saviour. It’s a series aimed at extolling the growth and success of the SPL, and includes Gerrard and amongst the A-list stars.

A official claimed: “It would be a bit embarrassing to sack around the time Netflix released a documentary glorifying all things about our league. But he needs some positive results.”
