The Premier League's match centre account has explained why both of 's penalty appeals against were rejected.

Cherries striker Antoine Semenyo was shown a yellow card for simulation after going down in the Villa box under Matty Cash's challenge, with the video assistant referee upholding the decision. A few minutes later, 's team appealed for a spot-kick when the ball struck Leon Bailey's arm, but referee Chris Kavanagh said no and those in the VAR room agreeing.

"The referee’s call of no penalty for simulation by Semenyo was checked and confirmed by the VAR," the statement on the first appeal read. "The referee’s call of no penalty for the potential handball by Bailey was checked and confirmed by the VAR - deeming that his arm was in a justifiable position" was the verdict for the second.

Despite the disappointment, still snatched a late point. Evanilson was the hero, heading home deep into stoppage time.

Former Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock was covering the match for Radio 5 Live and backed the decision not to award a penalty after the handball appeal. "You don't want to see those given as penalties," he said. "You can see what the Bournemouth players are thinking but it just drops and hits Bailey's arm and he knows absolutely nothing about it."

Villa had gone in front thanks to a close-range effort from Ross Barkley, only for Evanilson to also make an impact from the bench. However, Unai Emery's side thought they had an even earlier lead before VAR intervened to deny John McGinn.

"The referee’s call of goal for Aston Villa was checked by the VAR," a statement on the disallowed goal read. "As there was factual evidence that the ball was out of play in the build-up to the goal, the VAR recommended that the goal was disallowed."

"I don't want to talk about the referees," Bournemout manager Iraola told Match of the Day when asked about the penalty shouts. "I prefer not to speak. After I was suspended I prefer to start a clean slate."

Warnock was left frustrated by his former club's defending for the equaliser. "Credit to [Marcus] Tavernier because the ball in is exceptional.

"It's absolutely on the money. Evanilson with a deep run and times it perfectly. It ends up in the far back post and it is a quite brilliant header. But where is the marking? Who is picking him up?"
