Oleksandr Usyk explains why he was detained en-route to Anthony Joshua fight

Oleksandr Usyk has insisted his detention by police at a Polish airport was a "misunderstanding".

Unified heavyweight world champion Usyk is due in London this week ahead of Anthony Joshua's world title fight with Daniel Dubois at Wembley on Saturday night. But a video was released on social media of the Ukrainian being placed in handcuffs by police in the Polish city of Krakov.

But the fighter has now insisted the matter has been resolved. "Dear Friends," he wrote in a statement. "A misunderstanding took place. It was quickly resolved. Thanks to all who got concerned. Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for the efficient support. And respect to Polish Police for conducting their obligations with no regards to height, weight, reach and regalia."

Usyk will appear at a fan event near Wembley on Saturday where he will be joined by rival Tyson Fury. The fighters are due to meet in the ring four days before Christmas in a rematch of their clash in May which Usyk won on points.

The former undisputed cruiserweight world champion was shown being led away in cuffs, sparking alarm among his fans. But his team soon insisted the incident was "a misunderstanding" before his wife added: "Everything is fine, everything is fine. Oleksandr will explain everything later. Nothing is criminal. Goodnight, everyone."

Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky then spoke of his anger at the situation. "I was outraged by this attitude towards our citizen and champion," he said. "As soon as I was informed that everything is fine, our champion was released and no one is detaining him anymore."

Usyk defeated Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight world champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. But his reign lasted less than two months as he was forced to give up his belt instead of facing mandatory challenger Dubois.

Dubois had won the interim title by beating Filip Hrgovic in June and was later upgraded to full champion by the IBF. He will now defend his title against Joshua at the national stadium with the challenger attempting to become a three-time world champion.
