Southgate, talking at the European Club Association conference, said: “I won’t coach in the next year, for sure. I’m certain of that.

“I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time. I’m fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves. There’s no rush.”

Former boss is keen on taking over at United should they decide to make a change and dismiss Ten Hag after the club’s poor start to the season.

The top brass at Manchester United held a gruelling seven-hour meeting in London on Tuesday to discuss Ten Hag's position in the wake of the club's worst ever start to a campaign, though no decision has been communicated publicly.

Despite said silence, Ten Hag is said to be confident that he has dodged the bullet and is preparing for next weekend's Premier League fixture against Brentford as normal.

United are currently languishing in 14th place in the table after winning just two of their opening seven league matches. They have also made an underwhelming start to the new campaign, drawing with FC Twente and FC Porto.
