An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned when she discovered her husband's gift was actually worth a tidy sum.

The popular daytime programme travelled to Royal Marham for another episode, with the show's team of experts ready to meet guests and appraise their items.

Expert Geoffrey Munn was available to chat with a woman who had brought in an exquisite brooch that immediately caught his eye.

"Well here's a brooch gleaming in the sunshine and I rather want to know how it is with you," he enquired.

When asked who had given her the brooch, she responded: "My husband."

He went on to say: "That's very good, isn't it? Jewellery-buying husbands are almost an extinct species.

"But this is a most beautifully chosen one and I think it's got a very interesting subliminal message which is only secondary to what I'm going to tell you next, actually.

"In fact, it signifies forever luck in love. Here's a horseshoe for luck, the diamonds are forever and a little sprig of mistletoe, a little amatory significance there. "So forever luck in love but from your husband, and how often does he buy you bits of jewellery?

She shared: "Every now and again I get a little surprise", and when questioned if it was for her anniversary or birthday, the guest said: "No, just out of the blue."

He queried: "Out of the blue? And he buys that as a complete surprise to you, you'd never seen it before? " as the guest confirmed she hadn't.

"It's astounding really, because I had a little look at it earlier and on the back, there's a series of hallmarks and they're significant to what I'm going to tell you next.

"Well, this is a sequence of hallmarks that not only tells me this brooch is made in in 1900, but there's also a hallmark there that tells me that this is made by the most famous goldsmith that ever lived, this is a brooch made by Carl Faberge."

The guest was visibly delighted by the mention of the designer's name, smiling: "Lovely."

Geoffrey continued to explain: "And it says '56', because there are 56 parts of pure gold in the alloy and it's made for the immediate circle of the Emperor and Empress of Russia.

"They were avid shoppers at Faberge and they bought exactly this sort of thing to give away and in this case it's made of gold and decorated with this very interesting orange-coloured enamel and diamonds.

"It's a sentimental thing and it did that job for somebody, perhaps in the circle of [Tsar] Nicholas[II] and Alexandra but it did that job for you as well, didn't it?"

He then concluded: "It's a wonderful voyage of discovery...not only because of the amatory significance but because of the context and the excitement of the maker, they have been offered at auction, and they have fetched as much as £10,000."

The brooch's owner gasped: "Really? No. It can't be."

He responded: "I can't see any reason why this wouldn't fetch that actually.

"And you have a gem of a jewel and a gem of a husband as well."

She chuckled: "Yeah, lucky day isn't it? ", to which he retorted: "Yeah you are a lucky girl, no questions at all!"
